Home of Walker Bay Wines and Birkenhead Brewery
Walker Bay Estate is the first estate in the Southern Hemisphere to produce beer and wine on the same estate. Premium craft beers, cider and boutique wines are made to exacting standards by our diligent brew master and passionate winemaker.
The estate is named after the famous British troopship H.M. Birkenhead that floundered on the coast close to the estate in 1852 on the 26th of February. Founded in 1997, the brewery currently produces six craft beers. Walker Bay is known as one of the coolest wine wards with an average summer day temperature of 28 ยฐC. The moderating effect of our close proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean and the cool SE and SW sea breezes allows for the formation of high fruit flavours and acidity in the grapes as well as leading to optimum phenolic ripeness and lower alcohols in the wines. Our first wine was produced under the Walker Bay Vineyards label in 2007 and 2012 was a landmark year as we produced our first estate wine in our newly built state-of-the-art winery.
